Common Winter Health Problems and the Pharmacy Essentials You May Need

Qatar's winter is mild, but it still changes how people get ill. More time indoors, dusty winds and drier air bring more colds and flu, more dry skin and more people feeling run down.

This article covers the common winter health problems and the pharmacy essentials that help with each one, with links to the products on RAF Pharmacy.

Why Winter in Qatar Still Brings Health Problems

Much of the rise in winter illness comes from time indoors, dust and dry air rather than the cold alone, though temperatures do drop. In January 2025, Doha fell to 13°C and Abu Samra to 5°C. The Ministry of Public Health's seasonal flu vaccination campaign runs from October 2026 to March 2027 because winter usually brings a sharp rise in infections.

Dust, Allergies and Asthma

Hamad Medical Corporation describes winter as one of the hardest times of year for people with allergies or asthma, as cold, dry air irritates the airways and dust mites are more active indoors. Antihistamines and nasal sprays from our allergy and nasal decongestants range can help with allergy symptoms.

Flu and Common Cold: Symptoms and Treatment

[Image: cold vs flu symptom illustration | Alt text: Comparison of common cold and flu symptoms]

A cold builds gradually and stays mostly in the nose and throat, while flu arrives suddenly and affects the whole body. The CDC's comparison is a useful check:

  • Cold: sneezing, stuffy or runny nose, sore throat, mild cough
  • Flu: sudden onset, fever, body aches, chills, headache, fatigue

There's no cure for a cold, so treatment means rest, fluids and easing symptoms. Paracetamol helps with fever and aches, and our Panadol Cold and Flu range adds decongestant relief. For coughs, see our article on cough syrups and sore throat medicine.

The flu vaccine takes around two weeks to build full protection. Priority groups this season include people aged 50 and over, young children, pregnant women and anyone with a chronic condition, and they can get it at any PHCC centre without an appointment.

Get medical help quickly if you have difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, or a fever or cough that improves and then returns.

Fludrex Tablets for Cold and Flu Symptom Relief

Fludrex treats several symptoms in one dose. The tablets contain paracetamol for fever and aches, pseudoephedrine for a blocked nose, chlorphenamine (an antihistamine) for sneezing, and caffeine. Our Fludrex tablet range includes:

  • Fludrex Tablets 24's: QAR 14, for adults
  • Fludrex Syrup 120ml: QAR 10, for children aged 6 to 12

Don't take Fludrex with any other product containing paracetamol, and speak to a pharmacist first if you have high blood pressure, a heart condition, are pregnant, or take MAOI medicines. Our Fludrex vs Panadol comparison covers the differences between the two.

Winter Skincare: Managing Dry Skin with Cetaphil

Dry winter skin needs gentler washing and regular moisturising. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends short, warm showers and applying a fragrance-free moisturiser while skin is still damp. The Cetaphil range is made for sensitive skin:

  • Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser 118ml: QAR 69, soap-free and fragrance-free
  • Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream 100g / 250g: QAR 102 / QAR 158, for very dry skin
  • Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion 118ml: QAR 82, a lighter option
  • Cetaphil Lip Balm SPF50 8ml: QAR 46, fragrance-free

Alternatives include CeraVe Moisturising Cream (340g, QAR 118), which contains three essential ceramides, and QV Intensive Cream (100g, QAR 77.50). If dryness turns into eczema, see our article on dry, eczema-prone skin.

Multivitamins for Everyday Nutritional Support

A multivitamin can fill gaps in your diet, but it isn't a treatment for colds or flu. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements advises checking that it doesn't push any nutrient above its upper limit when combined with other supplements.

Vitamin D matters in Qatar. Among more than 100,000 adults tested at PHCC centres in 2017, 71.4% were deficient. Most multivitamins include some vitamin D, but if a blood test shows you're low, your doctor may recommend a separate supplement.

Our multivitamin collection includes Centrum Adults 30's (QAR 39) and Centrum Silver Adults 50+ 30's (QAR 47). Our article on the benefits of multivitamin tablets explains who they suit.

Protein Supplements for Winter Nutrition and Recovery

Your body uses protein to make antibodies and repair tissue, and a lack of dietary protein impairs immune function. There's little evidence extra protein helps if you already eat enough, so supplements make most sense for older adults with a poor appetite, people recovering from illness, or anyone training through winter.

Our protein supplements range includes Ensure Max Protein shakes (330ml, QAR 14.50) and whey powders from Applied Nutrition, Optimum Nutrition and Dymatize. See our article on protein for recovery for help choosing one.

A well-stocked medicine cabinet saves a late-night pharmacy run. Based on an NHS winter checklist, adapted for Qatar:

  • A digital thermometer and paracetamol
  • One combination cold and flu remedy (not two)
  • Lozenges and cough syrup from our Cough, Cold and Flu collection
  • A saline nasal spray for dusty days
  • A fragrance-free moisturiser and lip balm
  • A top-up of regular medicines and inhalers

For a year-round list, see our 10 essential over-the-counter medicines.

You can visit RAF Pharmacy branches across Qatar or order for express delivery in one to two hours, with 24/7 customer support and pharmacist chat on WhatsApp. Prices are correct as of October 2026 and may change.

FAQs

What are the most common winter health problems in Qatar?
Colds, flu, sore throats, allergies, asthma flare-ups and dry, itchy skin, mainly because people spend more time indoors and the air is drier and dustier.

Is the flu vaccine free in Qatar?
Yes. For the 2026 to 2027 season, the MoPH says it's free at PHCC centres. It's also available at HMC and over 50 private facilities. Call 16000 for details.

Can children take Fludrex?
Fludrex Syrup is for children aged 6 to 12, and Fludrex shouldn't be given to children under 6. The tablets are labelled for adults. Always follow the pack directions or ask a pharmacist.

Do I still need sunscreen in winter in Qatar?
Yes. PHCC recommends sunscreen in winter alongside moisturiser to protect against skin damage.

Does vitamin C help prevent colds?
For most people, no. A Cochrane review found regular vitamin C didn't reduce how often people caught colds, though it shortened them slightly (by about 8% in adults).
